CBS - Composite Body Solutions®
The structural product line is an innovative technology that responds to the challenge of the automotive industry. It enables improved handling and safety while reducing weight and cost. CBS is a macro-composite made of a metal or plastic carrier and high-density structural foam. Our CBS parts maintain cross section integrity by filling the cavity, and adhering to the metal sheet. Since 1998, when the first application of CBS was put in production, millions of vehicles have been built utilizing CBS for Safety, NVH applications, and fatigue life improvement

Key attributes
We have developed a large range of structural foams. These thermosetting epoxide polymers are available with a range of compressive strengths, stiffness, ductility and expansion rates.
We provide an in-depth analysis of the OEMs curing process and develop specific foams for best performance. We also provide a wide range of technologies:
  • injection molded non-tacky materials
  • extruded and die cut profiles
  • structural tapes.

Automotive expertise
L&L Products has developed a unique know-how in terms of Computer Aided Engineering. We are renowned among the OEMs as a robust development partner. Our experienced automotive engineers work closely with OEM Vehicle Body Engineering Departments. We use all major simulation software (LS Dyna, PamCrash, Abaqus, Radioss, etc.) for problem free exchange with the OEMs.

Strength management
Starting with an OEM’s model, CAE is used to determine where the structural foam is needed and to optimize the size and shape of the part.
A large choice of carriers - steel, polyamide, aluminum, magnesium and more - allows numerous possibilities.
The result is low cost, low weight, and high performance. We have developed our material cards with a unique proprietary methodology. The excellent correlation achieved guarantees the highest predictability of our models.

Finite element analysis
We use a wide variety of FEA software to perform our analysis and optimize the weight and performance of our solutions. We also use additional CAE tools to further increase the reliability of our models such as injection simulation to determine the fiber orientation of polyamide carriers.

Structural Reinforcement - Part 2

Customer Solutions

Crash applications
Structural solutions are capable of crushing and absorbing energy on their own. Plastic hinges are eliminated. Cross members nodes connections remain stable.
  • Rail reinforcement

  • A pillar reinforcement

  • Aluminium rail reinforcement

NVH applications
CBS ties together vehicle panels/members to form a stiffer composite structure. This changes resonance frequency of linked structures.

FMVSS 216 roof crush application
High strength adhesive structural foam expands and ties all the metal together. Load is distributed over a larger area to reduce stress in high stress locations.

Design in multipurpose CBS
CBS out-performs standard steel solutions. Thanks to our knowledge and expertise, we have been assigned major projects. Our company is now involved at the very early stage of the body in white design. This design-in approach allows large-scale weight and cost reduction. Our collaboration with major OEMs worldwide gave birth to a new generation of CBS that address both NVH and crash management issues on a global scale.
